Study Overview: This study looks at very early babies born between 23 and 26 weeks to see if a lower amount of platelets in their blood is safe and better for them. Platelets help stop bleeding. Babies this early often need platelet transfusions to prevent bleeding. This study wants to see if using fewer transfusions is safe after the first week of life.
- Length & Monitoring: Babies are monitored up to 40 weeks' age.
- Eligibility: Babies born between 23 and 26 weeks, less than 48 hours old are eligible.
- Randomization: Only those with specific low platelet counts are randomly picked for transfusions.
Parents must give consent for their baby to join, and some conditions like planned comfort care or certain bleeding disorders can exclude a baby. This research could change how doctors help these tiny babies and might save resources and costs in the future.
