Arginine Replacement Therapy in COVID-19 Study Summary

Arginine is a protein in the body that helps cells work better. This study will test if taking extra arginine can help kids with COVID-19 get better faster by improving their mitochondria, which are the powerhouses in cells. The study will take place at the Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, Arthur M. Blank Hospital. Kids will be split into groups and receive one of three doses of arginine three times a day for five days or until they leave the hospital.

COVID-19 can cause serious problems in children, like multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) and "Long Covid." The study will also check if low arginine levels are linked to these problems. The researchers want to see if improving arginine levels can help control the inflammation and other issues caused by COVID-19.

  • Study takes place in Atlanta and lasts up to 5 days.
  • Participants are children aged 3 to 21 with COVID-19.
  • Arginine will be given three times a day.
