Smoke Free SafeCare is a study combining two programs to make homes smoke-free and safer for children. Some Things are Better Outside (STBO) encourages families to keep smoke outside the home, reducing secondhand smoke (SHS), while SafeCare helps parents with young children, especially those involved with Child Protective Services (CPS), to improve parenting skills and home safety. This study is important because it targets both SHS exposure and risk of child maltreatment in low-income homes, aiming to see if the combined approach works better than SafeCare alone.
- The study lasts 18 weeks with SafeCare sessions.
- Participants must have a child aged 0-5, or up to 9 in Oklahoma, and report smoking at home.
- Participants can benefit from improved parenting skills and safer home environments.
To participate, caregivers must be referred to a SafeCare provider, be 18 or older, and live with someone who smokes. Providers must be SafeCare certified and work at an accredited agency. The study will not include caregivers with no home smoking or who can't understand the consent form. This research aims to improve family health and well-being in homes with high risk factors.
